Some pets, often feel separation anxiety and may act up. Your dog may start some destructive chewing and your cat may be a bit more vocal looking for some attention wondering where everyone has gone!
The good news is dogs & cats love routine - it makes them feel secure. Knowing certain things happen around the same time each day, gives them comfort and something to look forward to: walk times, feeding times, play & snuggle time. This is a great way to make the pets part of your daily routine and schedule. It's also a great way get the kids involved and to give them more responsibility.
Inform your kids that they need to help out with the family pet to ensure they stay happy & healthy. Make it part of their daily routine and/or chores. Ensure a "play-time" is scheduled into your kids routine when they come home from school or a morning walk after breakfast. It will be a good stress relief both for the pet and your child. Involve them in meal time and make them responsible for your pets feeding schedule. Ask your kids to think of other ideas they may have to include the family pet in the daily routines to get them more involved and to appreciate and care for that pet they wanted and promised they would care for. Remember those "I promise if you buy us a dog, I will pick up the poop" or "If you let me have a kitten we will clean the litter box" statements - well now is the time to set them to motion!
